During the early 1970s, US safety and emissions standards influenced changes in Porsche’s iconic 911. Introduced for 1974, the G-series 911 ushered in a transformative new look, including a shortened hood, crash-resistant impact bumpers, revamped lighting, and a plethora of other upgrades.
Porsche offered a higher-performing 911 model for European markets from 1974 to 1976. Nearly identical to the legendary 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 in performance and driving experience, the 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI echoed its predecessor’s specifications and retained its incredible Type 911/83 2.7-liter, 210 hp, air-cooled flat-six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Despite not being officially labeled an RS, the “Euro Carrera” stood as Porsche’s top-tier model at the time.
One of 1,011 examples built for the 1974 model year, this 911 Carrera 2.7 was ordered new by Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, the Prince of Bahrain. Finished in special order Copper Brown Metallic over a brown leather-to-sample interior, the 911 was tastefully optioned with a driver’s sport seat, forged light metal wheels in Diamond Metallic, Carrera script in gold, fog lights, and a Blaupunkt Bamberg radio. Also specified was “Option Group N18,” which included KONI shock absorbers, a tinted rear window with defroster, a rear fog light, intermittent wipers, and desirable air-conditioning, making this one of the most uniquely specified examples of any Euro Carrera.
Prince Abdullah is believed to have taken delivery at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart, using the car for European touring. In 1997, the Porsche was sold to England where it would reside with three owners while being serviced at Porsche specialists RSR Engineering and RUF Automobile GB. In 2011, the Carrera was reportedly acquired by German Porsche specialist Automobile Neff GmbH. According to a historical summary compiled by a previous owner on file, at Automobile Neff the car received a rotisserie restoration, a passenger sport seat, and the radio and antenna were removed.
In 2013, the Carrera was purchased by enthusiast Jack Moliner and exported to the US. Exhibited at the Porsche Club of America Santa Barbara Region Concours d’Elegance in October 2014, the car won First in Class and First in the Special Categories Division. In addition to its books, tool kit, spare, jack, air compressor, first aid kit, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the 911 is offered with a binder of historical documentation, which recounts its fascinating provenance in detail.
This Carrera presents extraordinarily well throughout and retains its matching- numbers engine and gearbox. With its unique and era-evoking specification, outstanding restoration, and thorough documentation, this is a Carrera 2.7 MFI of uncommon quality that is sure to excite even the most experienced Porsche connoisseur.
